We are super excited to have a new farm partner, Fox Plot Farm in La Fox.  In addition to supplying us, they'll have a booth at the Geneva Green Market, so check them out.

The farm is run by our good friends Nate (above) and Sarah (below).  Nate has actually been growing for us for a few years, but with his fiance Sarah on the payroll now, things are really blowing up!

They'll be growing, among other things, cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli, tuscan kale, hot and sweet peppers, lots of tomatoes, eggplants, garlic, peas and potatoes.  Nate reports that they have started literally thousands of plants.  Plus...

... their BEES just arrived, so there will some tasty honey at some point.

These tiny beet sprouts are just screaming, Spring, aren't they?  Finally!!!  

And while it'll be a month or so before any of the local produce starts trickling in, the shop is filled with amazing food RIGHT NOW, so STOP IN TODAY!!!

We co-hosted the second in our Support your local Farmer dinner series with Heritage Prairie Market on Thursday, August 14th. 

 

Over 100 guests enjoyed the menu of local, hickory-smoked bone-in pork chops with grilled peaches and onion compote, a savory summer ratatouille, just-picked corn salad with cantaloup and arugula and summer squash & carrot slaw. 

 

The evening was perfect... a line of afternoon thunderstorms had us a little nervous while we were setting up, but they pushed off to the south and left a sky of dramatic clouds that softened the light and created the perfect mood.  

I joined the guests on the farm tour and we all enjoyed hearing from Bron, Bob and the infamous Farmer Ted - Master of Heirloom Tomatoes.  This shot has me really excited about the September dinner, which will be our tomato festival and is going to be amazing (don't forget to sign up!).

Finally, under the glowing full moon, all the guests wandered to their cars and headed home satiated and content.  I have to say, I am really excited about these dinners and I genuinely feel that we are contributing something very special to the community in offering them.  I spent much of the evening wandering around chatting with the guests and I was thrilled to hear people's reactions... most people were blown away by the dramatic setting and (if I may say so...) beautiful food.  It goes beyond just a good meal, though... there is a very special sort of grounding satisfaction that one feels when they interact with food this way.  It is an intimacy with nature that gives people a sense of their place in this world.  Too dramatic?  Perhaps.  But I felt it on Thursday night and a lot of other people did too.  I guess there's only one way to find out... so we'll see you on September 18th.

Last week we co-hosted the first in our Feast on the Farm series of dinners at Heritage Prairie Farm in Elburn.  We've been using fresh, local produce and other foodstuffs from Heritage Prairie since they opened last year, and we've been planning this dinner series since then, so we were all really excited.  

The morning of our event, the staff at HP was busy harvesting, among other things, beautiful baby fennel, crisp snap peas, candy-sweet carrots, delicate-skinned new potatoes and exquisite lettuces.  Everything found it's way into our menu and onto the plates of over 40 hungry guests.  

We had set the tables overlooking the gardens and everyone enjoyed the cool, prairie breeze and dramatic sunset.  The dessert - gorgeous Lemon Balm Shortcakes served with fresh berries and whipped cream - was served just as a low, full moon rose, casting shadows of wispy midwest clouds over the scene.  All in all, it was a remarkable evening.

After an unseasonably cool spring, we are thrilled to see the weather finally coming around.  We've been getting beautiful, fresh produce from Heritage Prairie Market in Elburn including gorgeous little microgreens, savory garlic scapes, exquisite lettuces, and more.  We are super-excited for the upcoming growing season and all the amazingly fresh, local ingredients we'll have to play with.  

For those of you who don't already know about it, Heritage Prairie Market and Farm is on Brundidge Road at Rt. 38, just west of Geneva.  We've had a relationship with them for a few years, beginning with Bron's Bees Honey, which we sell in the shop and is produced by Bronwyn Weaver, who owns the farm with her husband, Bob.  Last summer we featured produce from Heritage Prairie in dishes here at the shop and on our catering menus.  This year, as their operation grows and they increase their plantings you can expect to see even more.  

We'll also be hosting a series of dinners called, Feast on the Farm, which will be held at the farm with Moveable Feast cooking dinners featuring local foods.  Tickets for Feast on the Farm dinners will be available at the farm or at Moveable Feast beginning in June.  Heritage Prairie also has an extensive lineup of programs, special events and goings-on scheduled for the whole summer, so stop by or check out their website at www.hpmfarm.com for more info.
